Russia, Belarus, Ukraine: Protection and Asylum for Deserters and Conscientious Objectors

by Connection e.V., EBCO, IFOR and WRI

(04.04.2023) Dear,

It’s great. More than 34,000 people have joined the #ObjectWarCampaign and signed the petition to protect conscientious objectors and deserters from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. We thank you very much for your support.

With this email we are sending you an update about the campaign. Please pass this information on to friends and acquaintances. We are continuing to collect signatures so that the campaign gets as much support as possible.

Action to International Day of Conscientious Objection

To conclude the signature campaign, we will hold a major action in Berlin with a high-profile performance. The action will take place on Monday, May 15, 11:00 am, in front of the European Commission building, Unter den Linden. International guests will also participate in the action. Various actions will also be held in other countries around May 15. Up-to-date information on this can be found at https://en.Connection-eV.org/ObjectWarCampaign.

European Network

The European network is in active exchange with each other. In a webinar there was a joint event of our partners from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. On February 20, we initiated an international day of action in front of Belarusian embassies and consulates to call on Belarus not to participate in the war. We participated in a hearing before the Human Rights Committee of the European Parliament and demanded asylum for conscientious objectors to the Ukraine war. Together we support conscientious objectors and deserters in the countries involved in the war, the Belarusian organization Nash Dom, the Russian Movement for Conscientious Objection, the Russian youth organization Vesna, the Ukrainian Pacifist Movement, the Caucasian Conscientious Objectors Network in Georgia and many others.

Counselling hotline

In our counselling hotline a person is available who can answer questions of affected conscientious objectors and deserters in Russian, English and German: get.out.2022@gmx.de or +49 157 824 702 51.

Germany refuses asylum

At the end of January 2023, we received the first decisions by the German Federal Office for Migration regarding Russian refusers. There were several rejections among them. It is frightening how politicians on the one hand speak out for the protection of these people - while the authority are creating facts that run counter to such an intention. Together with Pro Asyl, we have made these cases public with a detailed statement.

Financial support in the network

The groups in the European Network receives financial support from us thanks to generous donations. So far, we have been able to provide more than €100,000 for the work of the groups. Furthermore, our online donation platform can be reached via https://en.connection-ev.org/StopWarUkraineDonations-form. We are grateful for any support.

Stop Ukraine war! Asylum for all who refuse military service or desert!

Up-to-date information is provided at https://en.Connection-eV.org/ObjectWarCampaign. We are also available for suggestions and questions.

Thanks a lot
