§ 22 Satz 2 AufenthG (Trans. note — Residence Act) stipulates that foreigners may be granted a residence permit on grounds of international law and humanitarian considerations if their admission is declared to be in the political interests of the Federal Republic of Germany. Russian and Belarusian citizens who are particularly at risk due to their opposition to the war and their commitment to democracy and human rights were therefore explicitly mentioned.

Time and again, political parties have called for illegal entry to be stopped. And then this very single route of legal entry for people at risk is closed off.

There are repeated calls for the war against Ukraine to be stopped. Only those people who do not want to participate in this war are denied any help.

We therefore call on the federal government to reverse the suspension of the admission programs and to offer protection to conscientious objectors, draft dodgers, and deserters.
