Azerbaijan: No alternative military service until Karabakh resolution

(16.02.2012) There can be no discussion about alternative military service as long Azerbaijani land remains occupied, a senior MP has said. Siyavush Novruzov, a member of the Azerbaijani parliament’s Security and Defence Committee, told journalists that alternative service could not be considered until resolution of the conflict with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh, Gun.Az reported. The MP from the ruling New Azerbaijan Party said there was no need to make changes to the rules for conscription.

Azerbaijan: Supreme Court Rejected Bakhtiyar Hajiyev’s Appeal

(06.12.2011) Today, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan chaired by Imran Hajibayov considered the appeal of Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, the imprisoned youth activist and blogger. In May this year he was sentenced to two years of imprisonment on charges of evading military service. The Supreme Court judge declared that Bakhtiyar Hajiyev’s appeal was rejected. Hajiyev’s lawyer said since it is impossible to achieve justice in Azerbaijani courts he intended to seek justice in the European Court of Human Rights.

Azerbaijan imprisons conscientious objector

(20.10.2010) Baku, Azerbaijan - A three-judge panel of the Baku Court of Appeal upheld the Nasimi District Court’s conviction of conscientious objector Farid Mammedov. The court pronounced judgment on September 8, 2010, and immediately thereafter the 22-year-old was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs and taken to prison to serve a nine-month sentence.
