Egypt: Conscientious objector Maikel Nabil Sanad arrested by military police

(04.02.2011) War Resisters’ International has been informed that Maikel Nabil Sanad, a conscientious objector to military service, has been arrested by military police in Cairo at 2pm today. The military police used a military jeep with number plate 440700. It is presently not known why he has been arrested, and where he is being held. However, we are very concerned for his safety, especially as Maikel Nabil Sanad is a conscientious objector, and had been arrested previously in November 2010.

Israel: Second Prison Term for Conscientious Objector Ajuad Zidan

(27.12.2010) Conscientious objector Ajuad Zidan, 18, from the town of Beit Jann, a Palestinian member of the Druze religious community, was sentenced to 20 days of imprisonment on 14 Dec for his refusal to enlist in the Israeli military. This is his second term in prison (he was earlier sentenced to 10 days in prison on 30 Nov., although he was released a few days early following the evacuation of Military Prison no. 6 during the fire on Mt. Carmel earlier this month). He is currently held in Military Prison no. 4.

Colombia: Conscientious objector Jose Luis Peña detained for desertion

(01.12.2010) Objetores y Objetoras de Conciencia ACOOC reported about the detention of conscientious objector Jose Luis Peña. Jose Luis was detained by the Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad DAS on the 11th of November of 2010, as a deserter. After his detention in Bogota he was sent on the 15th of November to Leticia following the orders of Judge No 10 de Instruccion Penal Militar Batallon de Infanteria y Selva No. 50.

Azerbaijan: Conscientious objector Farid Mammedov sentenced to nine months in prison

(17.09.2010) War Resisters’ International has learned that conscientious objector Farid Mammedov was arrested on 8 September 2010, when his appeal against a prison sentence of nine months failed. As a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Farid Mammedov refuses military service for reasons of conscience.

22-year-old Farid Mammedov was sentenced on 16 July by the Baku Nasimi District Court under Criminal Code Article 321.1 to nine months imprisonment.
