Azerbaijan: Conscientious objector Farid Mammedov sentenced to nine months in prison

(17.09.2010) War Resisters’ International has learned that conscientious objector Farid Mammedov was arrested on 8 September 2010, when his appeal against a prison sentence of nine months failed. As a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Farid Mammedov refuses military service for reasons of conscience.

22-year-old Farid Mammedov was sentenced on 16 July by the Baku Nasimi District Court under Criminal Code Article 321.1 to nine months imprisonment.

Swede jailed for desertion despite end of conscription

(07.09.2010) A 20-year-old Swedish conscript has been convicted for desertion, even though compulsory military service ended in Sweden three months ago. The man, who hails from Halland in western Sweden, dropped out of his mandatory military service last winter after serving for just a few days, the Hallandsposten newspaper reports.

(03.09.2010) War Resisters’ International (WRI) has been informed that Turkish conscientious objector İnan Süver was in hunger strike beginning of September 2010. He ended his hunger strike for health reasons. It is not known to WRI what prompted the hunger strike, and what are the demands. İnan Süver was detained in Istanbul on 5 August 2010, and has been transferred to the military prison in Izmir on 23 August, where he is presently being held in pre-trial detention.

(06.08.2010) War Resisters’ International has been informed today that Turkish conscientious objector İnan Süver has been arrested today while trying to get an ID paper from the office of his municipality. During the check of his identity and came out that his address was listed as the address of a "deserter", and police was called to arrest him. He was first brought to the police station, and later this morning to Bakirkoy court, where his detention was ordered. He has been sent to Kasimpasa military prison, and it is expected that he will be transferred to Izmir soon.
