Großbritannien: Afghanistanverweigerer Joe Glenton gibt Orden zurück

(19.11.2010) Der ehemalige Soldat Joe Glenton, der sich geweigert hatte, in Afghanistan eingesetzt zu werden und inhaftiert war, gab einen Orden zurück. Er tat dies als Protest gegen die Beteiligung Großbritanniens am Krieg. Der 27-jährige Glenton aus York war nach seiner Verurteilung wegen Unerlaubter Abwesenheit sechs Monate in Haft. Er wurde im Juli aus der Haft entlassen. Bei der Übergabe des Veteranenabzeichens an Downing Street 10 sagte er: „Mir ist dieser symbolische Protest sehr wichtig“.

(28.07.2010) Der vor wenigen Tagen aus der Haft entlassene britische Verweigerer Joe Glenton sprach gestern anlässlich einer Antikriegsversammlung in London zum ersten Mal in der Öffentlichkeit. Er forderte den Rückzug der Truppen aus Afghanistan und ergänzte: „Für mich war und ist es eine Ehre zu verweigern. Ich habe festgestellt, dass der wahre Feind nicht der ist, auf den du das Gewehr richtest, sondern derjenige, der hinter und über dir steht und dich auffordert, abzudrücken.“ Joe Glenton wurde am 12. Juli vorzeitig aus der Haft entlassen.

„Bring the troops back from Afghanistan”

(28.07.2010) British soldier Joe Glenton, who was released from prison some days ago, spoke at a packed anti-war meeting in London yesterday. It was his first public appearance after his imprisonment. He demanded to bring back the troops from Afghanistan and added: „I consider it a badge of honor to have resisted and to continue to resist. I’ve learnt that the real enemy is not the man in front of you you’re pointing your rifle at, but the men directly behind you and above you telling you to pull the trigger.“ Joe Glenton was released on July 12th after serving a prison term for refusing to return to Afghanistan.

(15.05.2010) On World Conscientious Objection Day EBCO board held its annual meeting in Barcelona and supported a series of activities organised by EBCO’s Catalan member organisation, Moviment per la Pau (Movement for Peace), to commemorate the anniversary of 10 YEARS WITHOUT MILITARY SERVICE IN SPAIN AND 25 YEARS OF THE MOVIMENT FOR PEACE, a key actor in this process. The representatives of conscientious objectors in Europe were received by the President of the Catalan Parliament Mr. Ernest Benach and held a one day conference in the Open University in Barcelona.
