South Korea: Historical reporting to the UN CESCR

On the economic, social and cultural rights of conscientious objectors

(30.06.2025) Connection e.V. has just compiled a submission on the violations of economic, social and cultural rights of those who object to military service in the Republic of Korea and submitted to the UN CESCR to eventually address conscientious objection to military service also in relation to the violations of those specific rights, such as for instance the right to work.

You can read the full submission here. This report aims to suggest to CESCR specific issues to be included in the actual review of the country.

(04.12.2024) Am 3. Dezember erklärte Präsident Yoon Suk Yeol abrupt das Kriegsrecht. Park An-su, der zum Befehlshaber des Kriegsrechts ernannt wurde, verkündete die Dekrete des Kriegsrechtskommandos. Diese Dekrete stellen eine schwerwiegende Beeinträchtigung der verfassungsmäßigen Rechte wie Pressefreiheit, Veröffentlichungsfreiheit, Versammlungs- und Vereinigungsfreiheit dar. Sowohl die Ausrufung des Kriegsrechts durch den Präsidenten als auch die Dekrete des Kriegsrechtskommandanten sind Maßnahmen, die die Demokratie ernsthaft bedrohen.

A report on the International Conference on Conscientious Objection in Seoul, 18th-20th November 2023.

(06.02.2024) Around the activities of its 20th anniversary, the organization World Without War held a three-day international conference in Seoul. Activists and conscientious objectors from various countries, including Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Nepal, Israel, Russia, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, and the UK, gathered in the South Korean capital to discuss the status and challenges of conscientious objection in Asia.

Conference: Conscientious Objection in Asia, 18th-20th November, Seoul, South Korea

(07.09.2023) We are pleased to announce the conference “Conscientious Objection in Asia”, which will be held on 18th to 20th November in Seoul, South Korea. The event will gather conscientious objectors (COs) and campaigners of conscientious objection (CO) from across Asia to discuss the problems COs are facing today and how to counter these problems. The event is organised by World Without War in cooperation with Connection e.V. and War Resisters’ International.
